Water Softeners and Filter Control Valves
|
How does a water Softener Works?
Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions. Water softeners use resin beads, which hold sodium ions. When hard water passes through the resin beads inside the softener, the beads attract and hold calcium and magnesium ions and give off sodium ions. After this process, the water leaving the softener is soft.
Salt water is used to wash the resin beads. The brine solution loosens the hardness ions, which have built up on the resin beads; then the system backwashes and flushes the hardness minerals away. Once again the system is ready to soften more water.

Performa CV Softener Valve / 278 Series Auto-Twin / Parrallel Softener
The Performa Cv Twin Systems are a sophisticated twin-tank design, created for efficiency and convenience in a variety of applications. Incorporating an intelligent microprocessor control and water meter, the Autotrol Performa Cv Twin System electronically monitors water usage and regenerates each valve at the appropriate time to provide an uninterrupted supply of treated water. The Autotrol Performa Cv Twin Systems ease of operation is equaled only by the uncommon reliability of the Autotrol Performa Cv control valve with its simple design and reinforced Noryl* construction.
Performa Cv Twin Alternating System |
|
For use in residential and commercial applications, the Autotrol Performa Cv Twin Alternating System measures water flow through a flow meter in the outlet piping. During operation, when capacity of the on-line tank is reached, the main control switches the standby tank into operation and places the on-line tank into regeneration. After completing the regeneration, the control stops in the standby position until the on-line tank becomes exhausted. Prior to coming on-line, the control valve in standby performs an automatic fast rinse to drain, cleansing the tank and provides fresh, soft water to service. During normal operation, the main control displays the capacity remaining and flow rate for the on-line tank. |
|
Performa Cv High Flow System
The Autotrol Performa Cv High Flow System features a flow rate in excess of 45 gpm at peak conditions. For use in residential and commercial applications, the system measures flow through a 1-inch or 2-inch meter located in the outlet piping. The main control monitors the water usage and allocates half of the water to each tank. When one tank reaches its capacity, it goes into a regeneration and all of the service flow is allocated to the on-line tank. Once the regeneration is complete, the main control decides whether or not to regenerate the other tank and goes through the same process, if needed. Regeneration can be initiated at a defined time or immediately upon bed exhaustion. During normal operation, the main control displays the Capacity of Tank 1, the Capacity of Tank 2, and the Flow Rate. |

Features and Operation
The GE Osmonics Autotrol 172 Series control valve is a corrosion-resistant, 2-inch composite water softener or filter valve.
The valve is made of glass-reinforced Noryl, a structural plastic designed to stand up to the rigors of water softener or filter service. The corrosion-proof materials make this an ideal valve for use with the variety of chemicals used in water treatment regeneration.
The 172 valve features a static sealing flapper valve design which minimizes problems with debris in the water. The flappers are driven by hydraulic plungers on rolling diaphragms which provide smooth, quiet operation. The diaphragms are controlled by a pilot-valve assembly.
Control options include the Autotrol 440 six- or seven-day timer. The 450 impulse timer can also be used. The 172 valve requires a three-minute start signal which can be provided by the Autotrol 480QC demand regeneration control.
The small timer used to operate the pilot valves allows the use of one synchronous motor. This motor operates both the program timer and the pilot valve control cam.
Backwash timers are adjustable from three to15 minutes in three-minute steps. Brine rinse control time is adjustable from 22 to 62 minutes in four-minute steps.
The timer allows an installer or service person to manually index the cam, testing any one of the regeneration positions. This facilitates service and setup. The control is a five-cycle design. A separate pilot is provided to offer a hydraulic signal during regeneration. This allows for the easy use of service, bypass and lockout diaphragm valves.
The 172 valve is designed with quick disconnect fittings so that it can be set up with 2-inch NPT or BSPT brass adapters. Two inch PVC socket weld fittings are also available.
The 172 Series valve has been designed to provide reliable performance as a softener or filter control valve. The use of plastic materials allows the user greater versatility in the use of water conditioning regenerants. For softener applications, the 172 valve has the following cycles:
- Backwash loosens, cleans and stratifies the ion exchange resin.
- Brine is introduced in a downflow direction.
- Rinse washes the excess brine and hardness ions out of the resin.
- Pressurize packs the resin bed.
- Brine Refill and Purge refills the brine tank and removes the last traces of excess brine.
- Service provides continuous supply of soft water.

Features and Operation
The Autotrol 180 series softener/filter control valve is a 1 1/2-inch sized service flow brass valve for commercial and industrial softener systems.
The 180 control valve has only one moving part, a piston assembly controlled by a high torque motor. Motor speed is kept very slow to prevent water hammer during regeneration. Also, because it is motor driven, the valve is not dependent on water pressure for an effective seal.
The piston assembly has quad-ring seals for a sure, no-leak fit. The quad-rings are designed to provide a long service life. If they ever need to be replaced, the piston is easily removed and only the seals need to be replaced. The valve does not need to be removed from the piping system to replace the piston.
The valve may be either top-mounted or side-mounted. Valve installation and removal is simplified by the use of a top mount or side mount adapter. The 180 valve features adjustable regeneration time. Backwash can be adjusted in three minute increments from 8 to 50 minutes. Brine and slow rinse can be adjusted in three-minute increments from 1.5 to 43.5 minutes.
The 180 valve is available with six- or seven-day Model 440 electromechanical timers. The impulse timer control is also available and can be used with any remote device which produces a three- to five-minute signal to initiate a regeneration. The signal can be produced by an Autotrol 480QC, or a reset meter capable of producing the required signal.
The 180 series valve is also available as a five-cycle softener valve. The cycles are backwash, downflow brine, slow rinse, fast rinse and service. When used in filter applications, the 180 valve is available as a three- or five-cycle valve.

Features and Operation
The Autotrol 182 Series softener/filter control valve is a 2 or 2-1/2 inch sized service flow brass valve for large commercial and industrial softener systems. The valve includes a NEMA 3 enclosure for the control mechanism.
The 182 valve has only one moving part, a piston assembly. The location of the piston is controlled by a high torque motor.
But if they ever need to be replaced, the piston is easily removed and only the seals need to be replaced. The valve itself does not need to be removed from the piping system to replace the piston. The valve is side mounted on a separate cast iron adapter. If the entire valve needs to be removed, the side mount adapter remains in place so no piping is disturbed.
The valve has a built in hard water bypass, so that water is always available even when the softener is in regeneration. The control box has service and regeneration indicator lights to allow users to identify system status visually at a distance. The controller for the valve has terminals available to allow users to add alarm bells or whistles. The valve and controller are UL listed. The side mount adapter casting has been designed with tapped fittings for pressure gauges or sample cocks. These features facilitate checking the performance of the softener.
The 182 control valve is available with six- or seven-day electromechanical timers. An impulse controller is also available. The impulse timer can be used with any remote device which produces a minimum three-minute signal to initiate a regeneration. This signal can be produced by an Autotrol 480QC controller which is available with the 182 valve. In addition, various manufacturers provide reset meters capable of initiating the regeneration.
The 182 Series control valve is available as a five-cycle softener valve. The cycles are backwash, downflow brine, slow rinse, fast rinse and service. When used in filter applications, the 182 valve is available as three- or five-cycle valve.
